Guess from where the name Google originated?

There is a word called "Googol" which means "A cardinal number represented as 1 followed by 100 zeros (ten raised to the power of a hundred)". This term was formed by Milton Sirotta and was introduced in the book "Mathematics and the Imagination" by Kasner and James Newman. Researchers are working on technology that combines radar with cameras and video recognition software. The radar scans for objects and repositions the cameras to get a better look to determine direction and the size of the object.

Video recognition software is still rough around the edges (so to speak), requiring more processing power than is provided by an IC. I'm not sure how well this would work at night either, when it is really needed (infrared?).

It sounds promising, although it will be tricky to implement an automatic response system You would hate to have accidents caused by unnecessary braking. Any research in this direction is a good thing.

I received this article in my inbox a few days back from Harshu. Just wanted to share...

Read the article and to a certain limit agree with the author.

However, I feel that the author is biased and has not taken into consideration all the aspects of the Indian Economy and the IT industry. I also feel that the points mentioned by Rushya are little short of the larger image of the Indian IT industry.

I agree to the fact that, most of the Indian IT companies are into doing the "not so intelligent" work within India. However, based on this assumption, implying that the designing part is not done by the Indian companies is wrong. Also, the point mentioned that there are very few product based companies is wrong. Infosys, Geometric Software and other also have a strong product which they sell worldwide.

We need to first understand the economic structure of India. It was only in 1993 (during the period when Dr. Manmohan Singh was the then Finance Minister) that India came up with the idea of opening its market for the Multi-nationals (The liberalization policies came into existence). It was then that the actual development started in India. Till then there were lot of restrictions on Import and export, on Mergers and Acquisitions, in the areas of collaboration, etc. India till then was considered to be an Agriculture dominated Country. Agriculture had a major role to play in the Indian Economy. Then it was considered that more than 80% of the Indian revenue came from Agriculture. Post the opening of the markets for the foreign world, we have started seeing a rush of Multi-Nationals entering India. This was the era when Indian IT companies saw a light in the tunnel. Till then companies like Patni, Infosys and TCS were struggling to create there own positions.

Brain drain was considered to be a major issue in India. Due to liberalization the problem of brain drain has significantly lowered (looking at the ratio of students opting for jobs in India vs People opting to go abroad). These people who used to go abroad for further studies or job related activities used to do the same kind of job that people in India are doing in the IT firms today. No job is superior or inferior. Its just the individuals perception that makes it good or bad. Secondly the factor that there are less design level jobs happening in India is "FALSE". Major multi-nationals like Intel, IBM, HP, Motorola have started shifting their R&D centres to India and are employing Indians to work for them. Only recently Bill Gates had given a statement saying that he considers the South Indians to be the most intelligent species. This proves that there is no dearth of expertise among Indians. Just that they need leaders to channelise their energies.

To my knowledge funding has never been a problem for IT companies in India. There are so many cash rich cows awaiting a good, sellable idea from individuals. They are ready to invest money to create and sell these ideas. Infact, the amount of companies that have started recently in India with help from VC's is tremendous. We need not go out of this mailing list. Nevis Networks is a company funded by couple of VC's who are from and outside India. And certainly they are trying to build an entirely new product line by which they can put a strong challenge to the mighty companies like CISCO, Nortel, etc.

If we analyze the points above what we see is a logical trend, from nothing to something to creating something big. This is a cycle from which every Industry has to pass. We are on the verge of creating a strong India. The only problem with Indians is that they need leaders to guide them. They are by nature little reluctant to take risk. Indians would not dare to do something big due to the fear of failing. We keep on pointing fingers at others. I really pity the Author of the article who without doing anything to solve the problem, quit his job and went to do further studies. Instead I would have appreciated him, if he would have come up with some innovative idea and had started a new company of his.

We also need to understand that it is not only the individuals from the developed countries who are helping build their nations. It is a lot of Indians (3% of India Population is control 30% of the revenues in America) who are staying in those countries who are helping in building those nations. I strongly believe that Indians have the required Potential, the opportunities and the expertise with them. The only thing Indians need is an able leader in all areas. Each one of us has the potential to change what the author is trying to point. Why can't we take the initiative to change India??

If an event is made public, code in other classes can only add or remove handlers for that event; they can't necessarily fire it, find out all the handlers for it, or remove handlers they don't know about.
